Pirates try to handle Marlins again in Steel City

Baseball Betting Lines

04/21/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Facing the top team in baseball didn't scare Pittsburgh's pitching staff. Coming off their third shutout win in four games, the Pirates resume a three-game series with the Florida Marlins this evening at PNC Park.

Though just 7-6 on the season, the Pirates own the best team earned run average in the National League at 3.08. They shut out Atlanta in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, suffered an 11-1 loss in that series finale on Sunday but then came right back with an 8-0 win on Monday that halted Florida's seven-game winning streak.

Ross Ohlendorf threw seven shutout innings, allowing a mere two hits and one walk while striking out five. He combined with Tyler Yates and Jesse Chavez to post Pittsburgh's MLB-best fourth shutout of the season.

Jeff Karstens will try to keep the Pirates' hot pitching going. However, the right-hander lasted only four innings in his lone start of the season on Thursday versus Houston, getting a no-decision after giving up three runs on four hits and five walks.

The 26-year-old Karstens has never before faced the Marlins.

Plenty of run support would likely ease Karstens on the mound. Nate McLouth keyed Pittsburgh's eight-run attack on Monday, connecting on a three-run homer as part of a four-RBI day.

Adam LaRoche had a pair of hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored for Pittsburgh, which has won three of four and played without catcher Ryan Doumit. He sat out the contest due to a right wrist injury suffered on Sunday.

Emilio Bonifacio and Hanley Ramirez had the only hits for the Marlins, who fell to 11-2 overall and suffered their first road loss of the season (6-1).

Andrew Miller (0-1) took the loss after going a shaky 4 2/3 innings. The big left-hander allowed four runs on five hits and four walks and landed on the 15-day disabled list following the contest with a right oblique strain.

Right-hander Anibal Sanchez will try to get the Marlins back on track tonight and help them avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year. Sanchez is just one of a handful of Florida pitchers off to a hot start, as the club boasts a team ERA of 3.63 that is third in the NL.

Sanchez earned a no-decision in his first start of the year on April 10 versus the Mets despite five shutout innings in which he allowed four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. He then cracked the win column Thursday in Atlanta, allowing two runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings.

The 25-year-old has never faced Pittsburgh.

The Pirates lost three of five to the Marlins last year and the clubs split a two-game set in the Steel City.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
